Representatives from 22 organisations gathered on 16-17 April in Vienna to kick off the In –Time project. Lead by Austria Tech, the Federal Agency for Technological Measures in Austria, this new flagship project focuses on the delivery of multimodal Real Time Traffic and Travel Information services for drivers and travellers in European cities. Pilots will be set up in the course of the year in 6 European cities: Vienna, Brno, Bucarest, Oslo, Munich, and Florence. More specifically, In-Time will pilot and validate an innovative pan-European approach to Real Time Traffic and Travel Information (RTTI) services. The reliable and real-time delivery of these services to the individual traveller and to traffic management centres is likely to reduce energy consumption drastically in urban areas, across different modes of transport. The traveller is expected to change his/her travel behaviour according to the information he/she receives, opting for the most efficient and quickest modes for his/her travel journey. The role of the In-Time project will be to deliver a standardised interface for the various stakeholders involved to implement these RTTI services. Moreover, the project will also issue recommendations and study user acceptance, market potential and societal benefits that these services can offer. Based on an already existing standardised and harmonised interface between the various types of content providers (such as road operators, public transport operator, motorway operators, urban traffic management centre...) and the service providers, In-Time will develop both business to business as business to consumer services in the selected cities. The use of modern traffic management equipment and solutions will also reduce traffic congestion in all modes. As an example, modern technologies like the adoption of LED technology for signal heads will be introduced in various cities. The project is expected to bring a modal shift of 3% away from individual traffic and as a result, reduce energy consumption in the transport sector. |
